# How Much Food Do You Need for 50, 100 or 200 Guests?

Under-order and your event runs short; over-order and you're paying for food nobody eats. Here's a practical way to think about quantities.

## Start with dishes per guest, not total kilograms

Rather than calculating raw ingredient weights, it's more useful to think in terms of how many distinct dishes a guest is likely to sample. A typical Indian buffet guest tries a portion of most dishes on offer rather than a full serving of each — which is why a well-planned 8-10 dish buffet actually needs less food per head than people expect.

These are starting guidelines, not fixed rules — a birthday crowd eats differently from a wedding crowd, and timing (lunch vs. dinner vs. a long evening event) changes how much people eat.

## Factors that change these numbers

Event duration. A 5-hour wedding reception sees more repeat servings per guest than a quick 90-minute lunch.

Guest mix. A family/kids-heavy crowd (common at birthdays and house parties) typically eats less per head than an adult-only evening crowd.

Season and time of day. Summer lunch events often see lighter appetites than winter evening events.

## When in doubt, ask your caterer to plan for it
